The blockbuster hero RAJINIKANTH

Rajinikanth: The rise to
stardom (Part I)
By Ambili [December 11, 2010]
One fine day, long long ago, a
young bus conductor Shivaji Rao
Gaikwad from Bangalore caught
a train to Chennai, hoping to
become an actor. He had neither
any filmy background nor an
influential family to boost his
career! But he rewrote every
record in Tamil Cinema and
today, he is the most influential
man in India; yes, we are indeed
talking about our Superstar
Rajinikanth (who shares his
birthday with the legendary
thespian Dilip Kumar)! From a
simple bus conductor to a
demigod is no easy task! In Tamil
Nadu, there are three important
festivals that is been celebrated
with verve: Deepavali, Pongal
and Rajni's movie release; such is
his charisma and influence.
Born as Shivaji Rao Gaikwad in a
Maharashtrian family, he
completed his studies and began
service as a humble ticket
collector in a local bus service in
Bangalore. We can imagine that
that while he handled this low
profile job, young Sivaji must
have cast his innate charisma on
a majority of the commuters in
his bus route with his witticisms
and mannerisms. In 1973, his
friend Raj Bahadur motivated
him to join the Madras Film
Institute and the rest is history...
Rajinikanth made his debut in
Tamil cinema as a cancer patient
in K. Balachander's Apoorva
Raagangal in 1975. Most of
Rajni's initial films were double-
hero ventures. His roles were
either as a villain or as a
supporting actor, with Kamal
Haasan co-starring frequently as
the protagonist. Rajni's first
positive role was in Bhuvana Oru
Kelvikkuri (1977), directed by S.P.
Muthuraman. Bhairavi was his
first film as solo hero. Later
Mullum Malarum and
Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai won
him critical acclaim and placed
him firmly on the ladder of
success. These films were the
turning point in his career, but
during all these years, he was
not famous for his stylized
mannerisms.
Then came the pathbreaking
Billa, remake of Amitabh
Bachchan's Bollywood
blockbuster Don, and Rajni
entered the elevator of success.
Billa was followed by a series of
hits: Murattu Kaalai, Pokkiri Raja,
Thanikattu Raja, Naan Mahaan
Alla and Moondru Mugam. By
now, he had emerged as one of
the most successful heroes in
Tamil Cinema; his unique style
and dialogue delivery had
already won a million hearts.
With Padikkathavan, Thee,
Velaikaran, Dharmathin
Thalaivan and Mr. Bharath,
Rajinikanth was acknowledged as
the Superstar of Kollywood.
'Being successful is easy but
maintaining success is difficult.'
Come back to know more about
how our Superstar maintained
his success for almost four
decades.
'In Rajinikanth: The rise to
stardom (Part II)', we will tell you
how the Superstar of Kollywood
has become one of the most
influential persons in the
country.
