WORLD POPULATION AND SETTLEMENT
The earth's population is projected to rise from its current level of about 6.5 billion to reach some 10 billion by 2025 . The global distribution of this rapidly growing population is very uneven and is dictated by climate ,terrain and natural and economic sources . The great majority of the earths people live in coastal zones and along river valleys . Desert cover over 20% of the earth surface but support less than 5% of the world population . It is estimated that over half of the world population live in cities most of them in asia as a result of mass migration from rural areas in search of job . Many of these people
Live in so called megacities ,some with population as great as 40 million .
