DEPOSITION OF SEDIMENT

Storms ,earthquakes and volcanic activity trigger underwater currents known as turbidity currents which scours sand and gravel fqom the continental shelf creating underground canyons . These strong currents pick up material deposited at river mouths and deltas and carry it across the continental shelf and through the underground canyons where it is eventually laid down on the ocean floor in the form of fans .
