Most settlement in south america is clustered in a narrow belt in coastal zone in the northern andes . During the 20th century cities such as sao paulo and buenos aires grew enormously acting as powerful economic magnets to the rural population . Shantytowns have grown up on the outskirts of many major cities to house these immigrants often lacking basic amenities .
